Racial equity in government

Overview

Historically, many local government policies, programs, and procedures systematically excluded residents of color. This institutional racism has contributed significantly to racial disparities in jobs, wages, wealth, and other measures of economic well-being. These inequities remain today and are often perpetuated by practices that appear to be race-neutral. To reduce racial disparities and make progress towards achieving racial equity, local governments can embed equity considerations into how they allocate and spend resources, design new programs and public services, and engage the public.
